About Hardik Patel

“Hardik Patel is an Indian social activist who participated in the Patidar reservation agitation. Objective of the agitation is inclusion of the Patidar caste in the Other Backward Class (OBC) category in order to qualify for reserved quotas in education and government jobs.”

Early childhood

Hardik Patel was born on July 20, 1993, in a Hindu Patidar family of Gujarat. Bharatbhai and Ushaben are the proud parents of Mr. Hardik Patel. He lives in Chandan nagari village located in Viramgam taluka of Ahmedabad. He has been known as fearless, determined, kind hearted and a person with strong will power. He believes in equal rights. He always fights against injustice and nothing can stop him to accomplish his aim of to create a “Swaraj” for Patidar.

Educational Background

Hardik studied at Divyajyot Vidyalaya at Viramgam till 8th standard. After 8th, he moved to KB Shah Vinay Mandir. He has a bachelor’s degree in Commerce. In 1998 Father, Mr. Bharat Patel moved to Viramgam for better education of his children.

Initial Steps For Andolan

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Shahid Bhagat Singh and Balasaheb Thackeray are his role models. In 2011, Hardik Patel joined the organization called Sardar Patel Group (SPG) running in North Gujarat. However, after seeing his work method, SPG chairman made him the president of Viramgam Taluka. They formed a strong organization in their province and on this basis, they started organizing and awakening people in Saurashtra. They were involved in awakening the people on issues like women safety, gender equality and youth unemployment.

Reason Behind The Andolan

His Sister passed 12th std., with first division in Mehsana district. They were absolutely certain aboutgetting admission on merit grounds. Unfortunately, even after getting good marks, they struggled to get admission because they were not in reserved category. To their surprise, they are not the only one who were facing such injustice. The problem not only lied in getting admissions, but didn’t get government jobs easily.

First Rally As A Leader

After seeing all these hurdles and injustice to patidars, he decided to meet collector in his community to propose a rally in Mehsana on 6th July 2015. Rally’s aim was to demand inclusion of Patidars in the OBC (Other backward class) category. On 23rd July 2015, he organized his first ever rally to give an application letter to the Collector’s Office in Visnagar.

Beginning Of The Andolan

After looking at the success of the rally on 23rd July, he decided to conduct a rally on 14th August 2015 at Himmatnagar, to submit an application before collector, and on 16th August 2015 at Viramgam. He received huge public support in his other rally in Surat on 17th August 2015. On August 23rd, 2015, he submitted an application letter to the collector’s office in Vadodara.

Public Support

On August 25, 2015 he had a public meeting of 25 lakh people at GMDC ground in Ahmedabad. On the same day at 8 pm he was arrested by the police but looking at people’s unbelievable support to Hardik he got free within 10 minutes, when police tried to detain him. After that meeting, 7000 villagers of Gujarat joined him with an extraordinary support. Then Chief Minister Anandiben Patel announced the package of Rs 1000 crore under Youth Self-Employment Scheme. But they didn’t accept this package, because their primary demand was included in the other backward classes (OBC).
